Rare UK Tour by George Porter Jr and His New Orleans Band

As a forefather of funk with New Orleans combo The Meters, George Porter Jr helped create a bass style made famous on tracks like Cissy Strut and Just Kissed My Baby. His trademark grooves with drummer Zigaboo Modeleste have since been sampled or covered by the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest. Aside from with his work in the Meters, George has also notched up session work with the likes of Paul McCartney, Patti LaBelle, Dr John, Tori Amos and Taj Mahal. This September he’s bringing his acclaimed band the Runnin’ Pardners to the UK where he’ll be joined by special guests Crowd Company, one of the UK’s top funk/soul bands. A More Affordable Take on a Modern Classic

Warwick’s RockBass range continues to prove popular with the modern bassist on a budget. Available as a 4- or 5-string bass in either Nirvana Black Transparent High Polish or Natural High Polish, the Infinity features the same graceful curves as Warwick’s pro-level instruments. And like much of the German company’s output, it’s also available with a fretless neck. The body is constructed from red alder with a AAA flamed maple veneer top, bolt- on maple neck with ekanga veneer stripes and a wenge fretboard ( tigerstripe ebony is used for the fretless versions). It’s kitted out with Warwick’s Just a Nut III tedur nut, active 2-way electronics, controls for volume, balance, treble and bass, a two-piece Warwick bridge, Warwick security locks and a combination of MEC J- and MM-style pickups, which can be selected in series, parallel or as a single coil. www.warwick.de

Greg Cordez
Last Things Last

“A superb album that’s led from the bottom up.”
Released: February 2018
Standout Track: “Chekhov’s Gun”

Bass player-led projects often fall into two categories – the first being a technical one; the second is one that’s led from the bottom up. It’s testimony to his taste as both supportive sideman and composer that this fine album from bassist Greg Cordez falls squarely into the latter camp. Chock-full of superb compositions – notably atmospheric opener ‘All That Is’ with its brooding melody lines, and the emphatic group interplay on ‘Chekhov’s Gun’ – this is a superb album that builds on Greg’s cross-pollinating writing style.

Influenced by the work of Reid Anderson, Todd Sickafoose and Charlie Haden, Cordez also explores the music of Paul Motion, Mogwai, Ethiopiques and Gram Parsons. “With each day that passes, it appears to me the distance between elation and the desolate narrows and the sense is that these two themes run concurrently,” says Cordez.  “As best I could I wanted to represent this in both the music and in the album artwork.”

Bakithi Kumalo | Homeward Bound Tour http://www.ibassmag.com/bakithi-kumalo-homeward-bound-tour/ http://www.ibassmag.com/bakithi-kumalo-homeward-bound-tour/#respond Fri, 01 Jun 2018 10:47:27 +0000 http://www.ibassmag.com/?p=3799

Bakithi Kumalo & Phil Jones Bass

Legendary bassist Bakithi Kumalo has selected a Phil Jones Bass touring rig for the Paul Simon’s Homeward Bound Tour, also being billed as his farewell tour. Bakithi has been touring with Simon since the Grammy Award winning album, Graceland, which included his prodigious bass solo break in the song “Call Me Al”. Kumalo is often credited for creating a new style of bass playing on the album. Kumalo will be turning to the PJB D-1000 amp and C-9 speaker enclosures as his stage rig. He prefers the D-1000 because it combines high power (1000 watts) with PJB’s signature tone in a lightweight (5.3 lbs) box. The C9 cabs handle 900 watts each and are comprised of nine 5-inch PJB Piranha Chrome Dome speakers. If we ask very nicely, perhaps Bakithi will show us just what it can do.  www.pjbworld.com

New Michael Manring Blu-Ray

Fans of bass virtuoso Michael Manning can look forward to a new live recording taken from his 2016 tour of Japan. The Blu-ray will feature performances from the third night of the tour with songs like Monkey Businessman, Burkina and The Enormous Room. “We invited Michael Manring for his first solo live tour in Japan,” say Pudding Broadcast, the production company behind the release. “We finished editing in May 2017 and started publishing the products by CD and YouTube. However, we received an email from YouTube saying it would stop selling the paid content from September 2017. So we had to rush to change the method of publishing the video.” Pudding Broadcast’s Kickstarter campaign for the Blu-ray is open now and will be running until June 12th.

New Album ‘The Message’ To Be Released June 29th

Stanley Clarke is enjoying life right now. Or that’s the way it seems from the emboldened sounds of his latest album. Using his position as one of jazz’s senior figures, his young band includes phenomenal pianists Cameron Graves and Beka Gochiashvili, and drummer Mike Mitchell, who’s name you might recognise from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Ensemble. Backed by this versatile band, The Message (available via Mack Avenue Records) comprises a collection of tunes written in the midst of a tumultuous tour of Europe. It wields a mix of fusion and funk, breakbeats and cello suites with a little help from rapper Doug E. Fresh and trumpeter Mark Isham. “I’m very excited about our work on this album,” says Stanley. “I wanted to include some of my band members’ contributions and the result is an album that is funky, melodic, musical, contemporary and fresh with a rich multi-genre influence. The guys in this band are consummate young musicians with musical spirits that are very old.” www.stanleyclarke.com
