Get up to speed with this classy offering from Michael Tobias Design. If it’s good enough for Andrew…

This artist model from Michael Tobias has been created for one of the instruments most celebrated players – Andrew Gouché, whose cutting-edge bass tone has paved the way for modern-day gospel players everywhere.

Design

The Andrew Gouché Signature looks and feels fantastic, with a great set-up that meant we were able to take it straight from its gig bag to the stage. The burled maple used on this particular bass is quite stunning, with the figuring really setting this instrument apart. The one-piece maple neck has a thin profile, which allows for a low action and wider string spacing, meaning the neck is quick and easy to get around. Both Bartolini pickups have been custom-wound and are wired to five knurled control knobs that comprise bass, middle and treble EQ controls, a pickup blend and a push/pull volume control that deactivates the EQ when pulled away from the body. The mid control also offers a push/pull mid shift from 250Hz – 800Hz. You get a full complement of smoked chrome hardware, including the MTD quick release bridge. It’s also worth mentioning the MTD gig bag that’s included, as it’s a great addition.

Sounds

You don’t have to plug this bass in to know that it’s a high quality instrument. The well-balanced action, coupled with a strong all-round acoustic sound, is perfect for digging in with a pick or laying down some fingerstyle funk. The EQ adds definition, either boosting the bass frequencies or increasing the treble for some extra attack. “I only use a few different EQ settings depending on the song,” Andrew told us. “The cool thing about working with MTD is that Mike really knows my sound! Anyone who’s heard me play knows that I love that high sizzling plucked tone. It’s crisp, but warm at the same time.’” The slap sound is punchy and cutting-edge, but clear and articulate with a natural attack. Above all, the mix of features is a succesful one. The basic design is sleek and comfortable and the neck is really playable, resulting in a reliable and great sounding instrument that’s a winner even before you plug in.
